Bit of nerdy dye-sub trivia

Remember learning about the water cycle in school? Evaporation, condensation and precipitation? Well, there’s also sublimation, where a solid turns directly to a gas. (Think dry ice). This sublimation phenomenon was harnessed by clever printers to develop dye-sublimation printing. In this printing process, a special solid ink is made that converts directly to a gas when heated. The tiny gaseous ink molecules wander into the molecular crevices of fabrics, ceramics or plastics and then get stuck there when cooled. Because the ink is imbedded into the substrate instead of just resting on the surface, items that are printed with dye sublimation (probably the clothing you are wearing right now!) have bright permanent colors that won’t fade or crack even after multiple uses.
